Through The Years

The Bayaning Pilipino Awards is an annual search for modern-day heroes and shall continue to make a difference in spite of their limitations. Launched in 1995, it was envisioned by the late Don Eugenio Lopez, Jr. for which this award is now named, to give recognition to ordinary folks who had done heroic acts and extraordinary deeds. Thus with his acquiantance with Fr. Nilo E. Tanalega, SJ Excecutive Director of UGAT Foundation, Inc. this noble project was born.

The Bayaning Pilipino Awards, which is envisioned to be a yearly affair, comes as a fitting tribute to fine Filipino values of humanitarinism, industry, determination and dedication to public service.

It is intended to hold in high public esteem "existing heroes who have rendered service to the Filipino people."

"The heroes that we want to recognize now are those who are living and those whom the ordinary people can emulate, "ABS-CBN management stressed."

As envisioned, the annual search for the Bayaning Pilipino Awardees will promote Filipino values by highlighting their accomplishments in the field of public service.

The project also forms part of the network's efforts to "reciprocate the unyielding loyalty of our subscribers and other supporters" as reflected by excellent performance ratings given the company by prestigious industry surveys.

Bayaning Pilipino

1. Pakikipagkapwa-tao.

May respeto o paggalang sa pakikitungo sa iba.
May pakikinig at kabukasan sa opinyon at pananaw ng iba.
Marunong tumanggap ng puna at pagkakamali
May mapayapang disposisyon.
May paniniwala sa pagkakapantay-pantay ng lahat (walang paghuhusga maging sa relihiyon, kulay, kasarian o lahi).

2. Sipag, Tiyaga at Tapang.

Binubuhos ang sarili sa mga proyekto para sa kapwa.
May pagpupursige sa kabila ng mga hadlang.
May lakas ng loob (courage underfire).

3. Paglilingkod sa Mahihirap at sa Komunidad.

May responsibilidad sa komunidad
Naniniwala sa kapakanan ng nakararami.
Ginagalang at kinikilala ang kanyang kontribusyon sa komunidad
Pinagpapatuloy ang mga naumpisahang proyekto at gawain (long term consistency).

4. Katapatan at Karangalan.

Hindi nasangkot o nasasangkot sa anomang anomalya / iskandalo.
Ginagampanan ang tungkulin ng isang mamamayan.
May pagkilala sa sariling halaga (self worth).

5. May Takot at Pag-asa sa Diyos.

May kababaang-loob.
May malalim na pagtanggap sa sariling limitasyon (walang messianic complex).
May positibong pagtingin sa buhay; Nananatiling may pag-asa sa kabila ng krisis.

Bayaning Pamilyang Pilipino

1. Paglilingkod sa Mahihirap at Komunidad

Kinakailangan na karamihan (majority) sa mg miyembro ng pamilya ay kilala bilang mga taong nagsisilbi (serive-oriented).
May mga proyektong nakalaan o may ginagawa para sa mahihirap.
Ang mga taga-komunidad ay nakikitaan ng pagbabago tungo sa kahinhawahan na dulot ng mga proyektong pinasimulan (impact on community).

2. Ugnayan ng Pamilya

May mabuting samahan ang mga miyembro sa isat'isa.
May paggalang sa kani-kaniyang personalidad (kasama ang mga kakayahan maging ang mga kahinaan.

3. Katapatan at Karangalan

Hindi nasangkot o nasasangkot ang sinoman sa pamilya sa anomang / iskandalo (sa komunidad).

Bayaning Gurong Pilipino

MGA KATANGIAN

1. Nagsisilbi Kahit Lampas sa Tawag ng Tungkulin.

May kusang pagsisilbi kahit sa labas ng paaralan patungo sa lipunan.

2. May Matinding Paniniwala sa Panlipunang Katarungan.

Hindi basta sumasangayon sa paniniwala ng nakararami.
Matayog ang paninindigan sa sarili.

Kabilang sa aliman sa mababa (elementary) o mataas (high school) na antas; pampubliko (public) o pampribadong (private) institusyon.

5. Pagkamalikhain at Pagkamaparaan

Nagagawan ng paraan ang paggamit ng mga katutubong kagamitan o kung anoman ang mapapakinabangan para maging mas epektibo ang pagtuturo.

6. Nabubuhay sa Pag-asa

May positibong pagtingin sa buhay.
Hindi madaling masiraan ng loob sa kabila ng mga kakulangan o mga pagsubok sa propesyon.

A Call for More Heroes Please

We are still in need of more goods be it in cash or in kind like clothes, toiletries, rice, canned goods, noodles, biscuits, bottled water etc. We are also in dire need of more volunteers to pack and be deployed to distribute these goods. More volunteers are also being sent to the different araes to help clean up. So many things are needed to be done, so many items are still needed to be distributed, so many people still need our help.

Let us not be selfish, let us not turn our deaf ears to their cries.

Questions One Has About Volunteering for Relief Operations, But Was Afraid to Ask

1. I don't know anyone there!

- I didn't know anyone in the relief operations when I showed up. It's been a looooooooooong time since I was at the Ateneo. Just go there, head for the volunteer registration table and sign up.

If in doubt, look for a volunteer and ask how you can help. Someone is sure to point you in the right direction.

Don't be shy. Make new friends! You never know, you might even meet that special someone :D.

2. What should I bring?

- Yourself. Really.

No special equipment needed, just wear comfortable working clothes. A change of clothes and something to freshen up with would also be good things to bring. Ateneo's relief operation did ask those who want to help clean up stricken areas (clean up crews) to bring shovels and boots, but that's about it.

3. Which relief operation should I go to?

- It's really your choice. I went to the Ateneo because I studied there and saw that they were looking for volunteers in Facebook. But there were people from other schools (UP, etc) who went to the Ateneo operation.

You might want to go to somewhere you're familiar with, or the one nearest you.

4. What's there to do?

- A lot. One can be tasked to do the following:

Receive donated items - greet donors, accept and carry their donations for them, answer their questions, etc. Service with a smile! :D

Sort items - segregate donated clothes by gender (M/F), type (Top/Bottom), age (Baby/Child/Adult), or food by type (noodles/canned goods/biscuits/etc).

Pack items - stuff a set quantity of food/water/clothes into a plastic bag. Usually done assembly line-style, so people take turns putting different items into one bag. At the end of the line, there were people who tied the bags up (with the sheer volume there had to be people whose job was to tie the bags shut).

Last Sunday night we were putting out 45 bags per minute at one point. To put that in perspective, if we were able to sustain that clip, 2700 bags would've passed through our hands in an hour.

Distribution - People with cars/pickups/vans may be tasked to deliver the packages to stricken areas. Volunteers may be assigned to go with these people to help unload at the site.

Cleanup - Go to the stricken area and help clean out the area, including clogged drains, etc.

5. Is it hard work?

- I have to be honest, it's going to be manual labor, and in our case last night, have to sit/kneel on a hard floor to work because we had no work tables.

6. How much time should I put in?

- It's really up to you, as there is no time limit. It's going to understood that on weekdays, some people have work to do so they're going to welcome any help they can get.

7. Will I get fed?

- Not sure about the other relief centers, but Sunday night at the Ateneo, there was hot packaged food for the volunteers (donated) and bottled water/energy drinks/juice being passed out. There were people passing out Krispy Kreme stuff too.

8. I'm sold! But for how long will relief operations go on?

- Operations will go up to this Tuesday at least, and may be extended. Other organizations might do this all week.

8. OK, I'm here at a relief center. But I'm just standing here doing nothing, everyone else is busy

- That's fine. Ask people carrying stuff if you can lend a hand. Pick up discarded wrappers and toss them in the designated garbage pile.

And listen for an organizer to yell out "Volunteers! We need volunteers who aren't doing anything!!!!" Make your way to him or her, and volunteer, whatever that may be. :D

9. I really can't volunteer. :(

-That's okay! One can help in other ways: donating, or just by spreading word on how others can help.

10. Wait! I wanna do those daring rescues and be on TV!

-Errr. No.

Please leave that to trained rescuers.

my brother who is in the province sent me a text message late yesterday afternoon asking how i am. katipunan was reportedly neck-deep in flood water. i didn't know about it since i was warm, comfy and dry inside my apartment which is on the third floor. i went downstairs and checked, even up to the streets. it was still raining hard but glad to say, i didn't see the streets flooded from where i was.

then i saw these photos on facebook just this morning:

that's katipunan avenue just along ateneo where i work. i'd cross that street everyday.

the entire highway is indeed flooded that the street became impassable for a while.

this is the side street just beside the barangay hall. back in the early 2000, i lived near that area too. there's a creek nearby and the street would slope down like some catch basin for rain water which would tend to rise fairly quickly once creek water overflows. not a good place to stay indeed. the situation is much worse now since there is a construction site just beside it.

i could say i am fairly lucky for having stayed home that day. heck, i didn't even notice how disaster was that imminent till i received text messages from my office mates who resides in rodriguez, rizal. they say they were already stranded up there on their rooftops as early as 11am that morning and are asking for help. shame on me as i only woke up around that time. it felt cozy and cold having rained the entire night till that morning. i was only set out to attend a baptismal mass later that afternoon. such event was of course canceled.

i spent the rest of my day texting and calling hotline numbers for rescuers, checking out updates and reports on facebook and online news and reports on TV. it was plain heartbreaking. i don't think anyone could ever prepare themselves for such tragedy.

people frantically called out to their loved ones who were in school or at work. cars start floating or get swallowed in floodwater. lives and livelihoods have been lost. large concrete houses were damaged and submerged up to the second floor. shanties were wiped out in minutes. i heard there are still stranded people out there.

it is plain devastating. i'd cry seeing these dramas unfold before me. but i could also not help but smile and marvel at how these same people could still wave, pose and smile back at the cameras when rescued.

this ordeal is far from over. bodies out of nowhere are starting to float and be found. destruction is now revealed as the waters start to recede. although the storm has left and the rains intermittent, it left us more chaotic, muddy, and gloomy.

i am especially grateful that i am safe. but my heart still cries out for those victims and everyone who faced the storm right upfront. i could only imagine the horrors it brought them. the trauma. the pains.

i know, us Filipinos are possibly more resilient than any race out there. just the same, i'd like to urge everyone to keep on praying. to remain sensitive to their needs and their feelings. to try not to lash out at anyone at this time if only to point out on who to blame. there is a time for everything. and now is definitely not the time for that.

donations and volunteers are still needed at evacuation centers nearest you. here, ateneo is accepting donations and can be dropped at the College Covered Courts as early as 6am later this morning.

i'm glad my scramblings paid off, was able to join the Ateneo contingent who happened to have shuttle buses to take us to the Manila Cathedral for the funeral mass. we also managed to secure tickets so we could enter the church and witness everything that took place during the mass.

the experience was truly overwhelming. i couldn't help but shed tears for the loss but tears of inexplicable joy were also shed for that privelege of having known such a great person in this lifetime.�

my own version of heroes...

thanks to my local dibidi man, i am able to watch the tv show Heroes in full, minus the unnecessary commercial breaks and the agony of waiting for the next episode installment.

after about an entire day of watching these special people exhibiting powers of different kinds with the goal of actually saving the world i would drift off and hope that someday somehow we could have these abilities too and make fighting off evil easier. but i look back and around me and realize that i am actually amidst people who in their own ways are striving to make a difference. people who seem ordinary like the rest of us but actually posses better visions of themselves and the world.

take for example Sir Daryl, he can't fly like Peter Petrelli does. But he would scour the mountains of Bukidnon searching for indigenous communities that need education. he doesn't have the gift of healing but he would brave the perils of the jungle trekking, climbing for hours even days on end to reach these places.

Dr. Ato of Bacolod can't read minds like Matt Parkman can but he can examine and empathize with his patients suffering from eye problems. they don't have to tell him they badly need their assistance, he readily gives his support and operates on them mostly for free.

Miss Monica of Dumaguete opted to stay and teach in what used to be called as the "no man's land" of Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental. she doesn't have the power of rapid cell regeneration but she is strong and compassionate enough to the once armed rebels of the area that she does not have to fear for her life or worry about being caught in crossfires.

it doesn't really take modern gadgets and electronics to civilize men and make life easier like what Micah Sanders powers rest on. but for JR, leaving her family to teach basic education, hygiene and livelihood to the natives of Palawan proved to be way helpful for their advancement. she only needs to care and reach out to them and she is able to alleviate poverty and improve their over all sense of well being.

there are still a lot of others out there whom we have met along the way. they all never failed to give us enough inspiration to look for more.

the big difference i guess is that whereas our Heroes characters has this magnanimous goal of saving the world...our very own heroes are only thinking of doing their share through their own little ways. but considering how wicked our world has become, a little thing could indeed go a long, long way. yeah, little things do pile up.

i go out and think of how scary it might be meeting the Sylars of this world but is somehow relieved that it is all but fiction. I feel more secure and moved that these unassuming people in their own world out there are actually doing their share in fighting evil. i'm not being all true romantic about it, i'm just one of those who are lucky enough to have actually met people who still have the hearts for their fellows.

nah, this is not some shameless plug for our project, nor some good excuse for me blogging at work...i just can't help but compare and feel hope for all mankind. :)

i haven't thought of any other character for Hiro Nakamura as i find him too cute to be real.:D

Individual Category

"Versatile" ang pinakamalakas na katangiang ibinigay sa kanya ng kanyang katrabaho maging ito ay nasa hanay ng mga taga Department of Agrarian Reform/DENR, Community Health Workers, Katekista at ka Tribu (IPs). Naglilingkod bilang isang Community Organizer sa mga Indigenous People sa Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija, Diocesan Community Health Worker, Katekista sa Parokya at kahit ang Livelihood Project para sa ka tribu.
Kung ang usapin ay tungkol sa ikakabuti at ikauunlad ng kanyang kapwa IBALOY at IFUGAO, buhos ang kanyang sarili sa paglilingkod kasama ang pagtitiwala na makakamtan ang minimithi. Dahil sa pagmamahal at malasakit sa kanyang kalahi gagawin ni Manang Sol ang lahat upang di maglaho ng tuluyan ang yaman ng kanilang kultura at pagpapahalaga sa sarin bilang isang Ips.

Juanita Arguel
Teacher Category

Matagal na master teacher at puedeng-puede mabigyan ng mataas na posisyon sa paaralan, kumita ng malaki, ngunit hindi ita ang hinahangad ni Ginang Juanita S. Arguel kaya pinili ang maging guro. Minahal niya ang pagtuturo, kaya kahit sa edad na 57 patuloy pa rin siva sa paghubog di lamang sa mga kabataang may kapansanan pati na rin sa normal na bata ng Limay Elem. School, Limay Bataan.

Kilala si Ginang Arguel bilang isang mahusay, matiyagang guro dahil kahit ang mga magulang ng mga hearing impaired children ay tinuturuan ng sign language upang magkaunawaan sila sa isa't isa sa loob ng pamilya.

Sa paaralan, sinisikap niya na walang diskriminasyon ang special or normal chidren. Dahil para sa kanya: "kahit may kapansanan, may karapatan din silang makihalubilo sa mga gawaing panlipunan"

DOROTEO FAMILY
Antipolo, Rizal

Ang pamilya Doroteo ng Antipolo ay miyembro ng katutubong grupo ng mga Dumagat sa Antipolo. Mahirap ang kalagayan ng mga katutubong Dumagat. Ngunit ang pamilyang Doroteo kahit salat sa yamang material, ay larawan ng isang masaya at nagkakasundong pamilya.
Si Tatay Erning, ang matiyagang na magpaparito at paroon sa bayan na lubhang napakalayo upang humingi ng tulong sa pamahalaang lokal. Nanay Azon sa kanilang komunidad, kahit hindi nakapag-aral ng komadrona ay kaya niyang magpa-anak. Kasama ang kanyang buong pamilya, tulong-tulong at matiyaga nilang itinayo ang paaralan.
Ang kanilang mga anak naman ang madalas hingian ng tulong ng kanilang mga ka-tribo sa mga gawaing bayanihan. Ang kagandahang-loob at kabutihan ng pamilya Doroteo ay hindi matatawaran at tunay na kahanga-hanga.

Aisah Minukon
Maigo, Lanao del Norte
Youth Category

Mahirap maging babaeng Muslim at lumabas sa sariling tahanan para makisalamuha at maglingkod sa mamamayan, subalit hindi ito naging hadlang kay Aisah. Dahil dito mas nagsikap siya na matuto at maibahagi sa iba ang kanyang nilalaman.
Kinuha ang kursong Community Development sa kolehiyo para mas makisalamuha at makatulong sa mga tao sa komunidad. Isang inspirasyon ang ginagawa niyang pagbibigay ng lakas ng loob sa mga kababaihang Muslim na maging mas makabuluhan sa kapwa.
Kahangahanga ang tapang at sinseridad niya na magpatuloy sa kanyang gawain. Karaniwang ang babaeng Muslim ay mas tinatago o hindi hinahayaang lumabas at magpakita ng mas madaming kaalaman subalit nagawa ni Aisah na lumabas sa mga nakasanayan para lang makatulong sa mas nakararami.

Dr. Felipe Tolentino – America:
Boston, Massachusetts

Dr. Felipe Tolentino is a distinguished scientist; he pioneered in the study of the vitreous and retina. His research in this field helped in the understanding of the pathogenesis of diseases of the vitreous and retina. He authored and co-authored medical books that paved the way in the saving of many helpless blind eyes worldwide.

In the field of ophthalmology, he is nothing but the best. Dr. Tolentino is a world renowned ophthalmologist. He has treated heads of states, royalties, ministers, and people in industry, finance, education and law.

Dr. Tolentino has made outstanding and exceptional contributions not only in the field of ophthalmology but for humanity as well. He has never forgotten where he came from. He is a very altruistic person; he has compassion for the poor. He did not keep his practice to attending or treating ministers, heads of state and other high ranking officials all over the world. Instead, he actively pursued charitable projects that benefit the marginalized sectors in the Philippines. Dr. Tolentino founded and headed not one but three institutions that gear towards the mission “That no person should be needlessly blind”.
